We help to survive Common ash and Elms
In a recent issue of the journal KARKONOSZE Mountains (4/2016) published an article stating, among others, Project implemented in the Forest Gene Bank Kostrzyca.
Below Polish version of the article.

Co-financing under the Fund Bilateral Cooperation EEA Financial Mechanism 2009-2014
Dated 22.12.2015 r . Application No 1077/2015 for the project entitled " Preservation of biological diversity of habitats from Natura 2000areas by ex situ conservation of Common ash, Wych elm, Field elm and European White elm in Poland (fraxUmLBG)" was placed on the list of projects recommended for funding. Support under the Bilateral Cooperation Fund involves the exchange of knowledge, technology and experience from the Norwegian partner of the Norwegian Forest Seed Centre SKOGFRØVERKET .
Conclusion of the first stage of evaluation of pathogen elimination – classic method
In order to protect the genetic material of Fraxinus excelsior stored in Kostrzyca FGB against Hymenoscyphus fraxineus phytopathogen a series of procedures aimed at developing effective methods of elimination of the pathogen from Fraxinus excelsior samaras were conducted.
Successful cryogenic preservation of seeds of the Common ash and Elms.
Successful cryogenic preservation of seeds of Fraxinus excelsior L., Ulmus glabra Huds., Ulmus laevis Pall. and Ulmus minor Mill.
As a part of a project entitled: “Preservation of biological diversity of habitats from NATURA 2000 areas by ex situ conservation of Common ash, Wych elm, Field elm and European White elm in the Poland(FraxUmLBG)" the specialists at Cryopreservation Laboratory made cryogenic reserves of seeds of the above-mentioned species (pic. 1a-c).

Development of methodology of molecular study of samaras of Fraxinus excelsior aimed at detecting the presence of Hymenoscyphus fraxineus .
In order to confirm the effectiveness of thermotherapy and cryotherapy in eliminating Hymenoscyphus fraxineus pathogens, seed samples have been subject to two tests: in vitro culture on a special substrate and molecular analysis aimed at identification of the pathogen’s genetic material.
The first seedlings of Fraxinus excelsior L. Seed germination and sprouting.
As a part of a project entitled: “Preservation of biological diversity of habitats from NATURA 2000 areas by ex situ conservation of Common ash, Wych elm, Field elm and European White elm in Poland(FraxUmLBG)" the Research and Conservation Team made an assessment of the viability of Fraxinus excelsior seeds based on a germination method.
Preservation of genetic material of Fraxinus excelsior L.
To be able to store genetic material of Fraxinus excelsior in Kostrzyca Forest Gene Bank the seeds need to be dried to 8-10% moisture level to maintain the viability during long-term preservation in sub-zero temperatures.
The Significance and Protection of Biodiversity in NATURA 2000 Areas Competition – the final
On December 3, 2015, the seat of the Kostrzyca Forest Gene Bank hosted the final of a competition co-financed under the 2009-2014 EEA Financial Mechanism entitled: “The Significance and Protection of Biodiversity in NATURA 2000 Areas”. Out of the 600 contenders from middle schools in the Lower Silesia Voivodeship, 75 students qualified for the final stage. The competition in the IV and V stage was full of excitement. The students felt really comfortable at Kostrzyca Forest Gene Bank, and the prizes and gifts made them feel even better. After a day of hard work, at 2 p.m. we finally learnt the results.
Assessment of the effectiveness of cryotherapy and thermotherapy in eliminating pathogens
As a part of the FraxUmLBG project the specialists at the Research and Implementation Lab Complex initiated research aimed at finding a method of elimination of a pathogen from samaras of Fraxinus excelsior prior to long-term preservation in FBG.
The seeding material was acquired from 13 positions in Poland, such as the Forest Districts of Pniewy, Międzychód, Choszczno, Głusko, Strzelce Krajeńskie, Gryfino, Łobez, Tuczno, Czarnobór, Kwidzyń, Wejherowo, Jamy, Zamrzenica.
Collection and preparation for preservation of the seeds of Ulmus glabra, Ulmus minor, Ulmus laevis
As a part of the project: “Preserving biological diversity of habitats in NATURA 2000 areas through ex situ conservation of Fraxinus excelsior, Ulmus glabra, Ulmus minor and Ulmus laevis within the territory of Poland” (FraxUmLBG) Kostrzyca Forest Gene Bank receives batches of Ulmus samaras collected in nature reserves, seed sources, from parent and preservative trees.
